Money skills every child should learn this summer
Summer is the perfect season for money practice: children have more time, more real-life spending moments (days out, snacks, hobbies), and more opportunities to earn. The goal is not to raise mini accountants, it is to give children safe practice with money while you are close enough to guide.
Here is your summer money skills checklist
- Needs vs wants: Can they tell the difference when they are excited?
- Spending with a plan: Decide before you leave the house (snacks, toy, ice cream)
- Saving for a goal: Choose one item and work towards it over weeks
- Budgeting: Make money last until the next “pay day”
- Price comparison: Compare two options and explain which is better value
- Digital money awareness: Cards/taps are still real money (and can disappear faster)
- Scam awareness: “Too good to be true”, urgency, and “secret” are red flags (especially online)
- Earning: Link effort to income (chores, mini jobs, helping family, simple services)
- Giving: Teach generosity with boundaries (give with intention, not pressure)
- Reflection: A 2-minute weekly check-in: “What went well? What would you do differently?”
Quick table: What to teach by age
| Age | Focus | Summer Practice Ideas |
| 3-5 | Money basics | Identify coins/notes; play “shop”; choose between two items; simple “save jar” for one goa |
| 6-8 | Spending + saving | Weekly pocket money; “Spend/Save/Give” jars; write a mini list before a day out; compare prices in a shop |
| 9-11 | Budgeting + value | Plan a £10 outing budget; track spending for one week; learn “best value” vs “cheapest”; set a 4–6 week saving goal. |
| 12-14 | Digital money + choices | Talk about online purchases; set a monthly budget for treats; practise “cool-off rule” (wait 24 hours before big wants). |
| 15-18 | Adult money basics | Read a payslip together; discuss tax/NI; create a basic monthly budget; scam awareness; start learning about credit and interests. |
Pick 1 age-appropriate skill from the table and practise it for 7 days
