The Biggest Budget Line This Summer: FOOD!

Let us help you reduce that budget (without living on dry cereal)
I know the food shop is now looking like a second mortgage, but the good news is that you can cut your food spend without cutting joy, by using subsidised kids’ meals, tightening your
home system, and getting children involved in waste reduction.

UK establishments offering free or subsidised food this summer

Always double-check offer T&Cs (dates, minimum spend, app requirements, participating locations)
Tip: Add “kids eat free” + your town into Google in late June/early July, many chains publish
seasonal pages and app vouchers closer to the holidays.
Other Practical ways to cut your food budget this summer

1) Run a “two-shop week”
● Big shop once (staples + planned meals)
● Top-up shop once (fresh fruit/veg/milk).
This stops the “daily mini shop” trap, where snacks multiply and spend creeps up

2) Plan only 10 dinners (not 21)
Try:
● 5 easy dinners you repeat weekly
● 3 “freezer saver” dinners
● 2 fun nights (homemade pizza/wrap bar)

3) Make snacks a “system”
Create a snack box per child for the day (or per morning):
● 1 fruit
● 1 protein (cheese/yoghurt/eggs)
● 1 carb (crackers/breadsticks)
● 1 “treat”
When the box is empty… snack time is done

4) Use “Eat first” shelves
Dedicate a fridge shelf to food that must be used soon. Kids can help pick meals from it.
Food waste reduces fast when it is visible.

5) Reduce meals out without losing the vibe
Replace 1 restaurant trip/week with:
● Picnic + playpark
● “Home café” morning (croissants + hot chocolate)
● Cinema-at-home + £3 nachos

Get the kids involved: 5 fun ways to reduce food waste

1. Leftover chef challenge: kids invent a name + plating for leftovers (“Rainbow Pasta
Bowl”)
2. Fridge bingo: “use up” items win points (yoghurts, berries, spinach, tortillas)
3. Portion police: kids help serve portions so plates come back empty
4. Freeze-first rule: batch cook and freeze portions before boredom hits
5. Snack budgeting: give children a set number of snacks per day (they choose
timing)
